IN MY OPINION

A Short Report and a Couple of Comments BY ROBIN CARSON

IN MY OPINION

So What ’ s With the Name-Change Survey ? At the last two meetings of the Editorial Board , we discussed the possibility of changing the name of news & views . ARTA Executive Director and CAO , Daniel Mulloy , had done some research and had discovered that the same name was being used by several publications . The Editorial Board felt that with the recent design change , now might be an opportune time to change the name as well .
The problem with the name as it is , is that it really is more descriptive of the newsletter that news & views used to be than of the magazine it has become . Did you know that both ARTA ’ s Bylaws and Policies and Procedures still refer to news & views as a newsletter ? Add to that the fact that with every issue we get many requests from non-ARTA seniors to buy news & views as a magazine relevant to seniors , and it was necessary at least to explore the idea of changing the name .
The Editorial Board felt that it would be very important to find out what ARTA members thought of changing the name , and that is why the survey was sent out . I will admit that we did a terrible job of explaining any context for that survey . Nonetheless , we received a great response from our members .
The results are in . The members have spoken . The new name will be . . . ( wait for it . . .)— news & views . I hope you like it . I do .
The Election ( s ) I belong to a fraternal organization that believes that there is no entitlement to a ‘ right ’ without an equal and parallel duty . Today , everyone demands their rights ; few understand that those rights are dearly bought with duty .
As I write this , the provincial election is still in the future ; when you read it , you will know the results of that election . While I cannot predict those results ( although I have a pretty good idea !) one thing I can predict is that only about 50 % of the electorate will have cast a ballot . Half will remain home rather than make the effort to vote .
Personally , I take voting seriously . In fifty years of voting , I have never missed casting a ballot ; and if that sounds pompous and overly superior , then you should probably give a look to your own record . A non-vote is a vote for the status quo . It is also lazy and irresponsible . If you want to make a statement , then the best way to do that is to get off your tochas and spoil a ballot . At least doing that shows that you have enough gumption to get to the poll . Staying home is your ‘ right ,’ but it smacks of indolence .
There is a federal election coming . While I doubt that I need to remind anyone of our generation to vote , I suspect that children and grandchildren might need a reminder — or a prod .
To Smile I went to the supermarket the other day and realized that , despite my advancing years , I am becoming much stronger than I used to be .
When I was twenty , I couldn ’ t have begun to lift $ 100 worth of groceries ; but now , I can lift them with one hand .
Please let us know your thoughts on news & views . Letters and articles are always welcome .
