FROM THE BRANCHES

Gladys Lilje lives in the rural community of Boscombe . Like the other two recipients of this year ’ s awards , she is also an important member of the St . Paul Healthcare Auxiliary . She faithfully volunteers as a clerk at the gift shop and also creates various goods sold at the shop . She willingly gives of her time to visit the residents of long-term care facilities .
Her history as a model volunteer in the Boscombe Community extends back for many , many years . The heart of Boscombe is its community hall , the only building there ; and thanks to volunteers such as Gladys , Boscombe Community Hall is recognized throughout much of Alberta and Western Saskatchewan as the cradle of country music . The annual Country Jamboree , held in July , attracts hundreds of spectators who come to hear the best amateur country musicians this part of the world has to offer . The dedication of volunteers like Gladys has given this event a reputation that brings people to the Jamboree year after year . Feeding a large crowd of people for three days and scheduling so many musicians is a testament to the quality and dedication of Gladys and her neighbours . Beyond the annual Jamboree , many other events are held in the community hall throughout the year , from weekly cribbage tournaments to monthly country music ‘ jams .’
Gladys also volunteers readily at the neighbouring community of Ashmont , where she taught for most of her professional career .
NEARTA is pleased to present this award to each of these outstanding volunteers who contribute so much to their communities .
