We arrived in Mazatlan, Mexico, on Januar

Starting in a school mid-year
is not easy anywhere but, this
being Mexico, the staff and
students were very welcoming
and friendly. It was helpful that
I can speak and understand a
lot of Spanish, as I have had
many life experiences in Mexico,
both volunteering and travelling
throughout the country.
My husband and I were slowly
adjusting to the cultural changes
of Mexico and the Mazatleco life,
when on March 11, the world
tilted for us as it did for many
others in the world.
The brick and mortar part of
our school was closing, and within
days we were to become an online
school. This meant that everyone
— including myself, teachers and
administrators (both Mexican and
Canadian), students, and parents
— were on a steep learning and
technology curve.
