The committee is responsible to ensure that eligible affiliate groups have had a risk management assessment completed before they are presented to the ARTA Board of Directors for admittance to the ARTA Retiree Benefits Plan . Once the Board of Directors approves affiliate groups , the committee monitors these groups on behalf of the plan .
The benefits committee is also responsible for the education of the Board of Directors , the members in the various branches throughout the province and the provision of opportunities for individuals within the organization to become ambassadors for ARTA .

Human Resources is a complex area in any organization . In an organization like the Alberta Retired Teachers ’ Association it is continually evolving , just as ARTA itself constantly grows and changes . The Human Resources Committee is under the direction of the ARTA Board of Directors and is responsible to it .
The Human Resources Committee is made up of three elected ARTA members , ARTA officers , and the executive director or designate as an ex officio member . Each elected member serves a three-year term .
The committee meets four times a year or more often if the need arises .
Another committee responsibility is to keep the human resources manual up to date . If necessary , the committee participates in the negotiations for the position of a new executive director . The executive director ’ s salary and benefits , as well as the budget for office staff salaries and benefits are recommended to the Board . After investigating and researching issues related to staff , it is the responsibility of the committee to report to the Board of Directors with recommendations .
The committee receives reports from the executive director on the changing roles and responsibilities of the office staff , the hiring of new staff , and the retirement of any staff members . A major responsibility of the committee is to ensure that an annual performance review of the executive director is conducted and reviewed . This review is done in conjunction with Aon Hewitt consultants . The committee also supports the executive director with regard to the staff development sessions consisting of ongoing training and education opportunities .
The Human Resources Committee is present at the now-annual staff luncheon , at which the office staff , committee members and ARTA officers along with the executive director pause in a busy ARTA day to sit down to lunch , fellowship and an opportunity to get to know each other better . The human resources committee is also pleased to have an opportunity to assist office staff with some lighthearted activities at the October Annual General Meeting . news & views SUMMER 2015 | 27
