The last fifty years have been an incredible journey for me . I graduated from the University of Alberta in the spring of 1963 and started my career as a high school mathematics , science , and physical education teacher and vice-principal in Paradise Valley , Alberta , that fall . Thirty-three very satisfying years in the education profession and fifteen years of retirement ( I didn ’ t stop work I just stopped earning money ) provided me with the opportunity to chair the ARTA 50 th Anniversary Ad Hoc Committee .

This great group of hardworking , dedicated and very creative people has helped put an exclamation mark on my fourteen years of work with ARTA . Our 50 th Anniversary Committee is composed of myself , Lily McCool , ARTA Past President ; Chuck Rose , CRTA Past President and former Governance ( Representative } Committee member ; Paul Boisvert , ARTA past president ; Gordon Cumming , ARTA President ; and Daniel Mulloy , ARTA Executive Director . The committee , without apology , also drew on the experience , expertise and sound judgment of Robin Carson , Janet McLennan , Don Mock , Ardith Trudzik , Edna Warriner , Greg Chitrenky and Marilyn Bossert to achieve its mandate . I am very grateful for their hard work , dedication , creative input and contributions to every aspect of our work .
The assigned responsibilities of the committee were to plan , facilitate , coordinate , conduct and support all projects and events that include a component of celebrating ARTA ’ s 50 th anniversary . I want to express my appreciation to all of those ARTA members , ARTA branches and ARTA committees that are taking advantage of this opportunity . Celebrating fifty years of growth in membership , increased services to members , economic stability and professional office support have put ARTA in the favoured position of being an influential voice for our members and a respected participant in other provincial and national organizations .
I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to serve ARTA as Chair of the 50 th Anniversary Ad Hoc Committee and look forward to participating in many of the activities and events still to be held during this significant year in our history . My hope is that all of our members find a way to make our 50 th anniversary a memorable experience for themselves and others as well .
Dean McMullen
