This April, after a wonderful and physically active trip to Japan where I climbed countless stairs to see the many magical shrines, temples, and points of interest, I made the decision. This year, I would not volunteer for the Challenge the Chief event— I would participate instead.
To prepare for the grueling 57-flight event, I focused intensely on my cardiovascular fitness. I already consider myself to be in good shape, but once I committed, I trained like Rocky. As a petite 63-year-old retired teacher, I think some of my fellow participants in the competition might have underestimated my determination and fitness level!
My training began with competitive swim workouts, aquatic fitness classes, and climbing the Battalion Park stairs in Calgary. When that felt too easy, I transitioned to climbing the stairs at the University of Calgary’ s MacKimmie Tower, taking the steps up and the elevator down to build maximum endurance. In my final workout before the event, I managed to climb fourteen floors eleven times in a single hour, totaling 154 floors. That achievement gave me the confidence to know I was ready.
The experience of participating in the event was nothing short of thrilling, both the climb itself and the total amount I was able to raise. Thanks to family, friends, and my colleagues’ generosity, I raised a total of $ 6,296 for Wellspring Alberta. It felt like a way of thanking the organization for all the support I received during my cancer experience.
This milestone isn’ t just for me— it’ s for anyone out there fighting, questioning, or hanging in the balance. Your next step could be the one that changes everything.
I’ m proud of how far I’ ve come, and even more proud to keep walking this road— for myself and for those still searching for hope.
