A VICTORY
Earlier this year, I participated in one of the most difficult yet satisfying fitness challenges of my life. I climbed 1,370 steps, 57 storeys, in 23 minutes and 43 seconds. While it was hard, I enjoyed it— every step of the way.
The climb was part of a fundraiser: Wellspring Alberta’ s annual Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge, called“ Challenge the Chief,” in downtown Calgary’ s Brookfield Place. It’ s a feat that anyone should feel proud to complete, but for me, there was an extra layer of pride— just a few years ago, I survived my cancer diagnosis.
The walk towards life-saving medical treatment to kill the cancer was one of the hardest experiences of my life. Survivorship has not just been about removing the cancer, but about rebuilding my spirit, finding my voice, and showing myself that healing is possible. The last few years have taught me resilience and the courage to enjoy life again.
Being here now means more than just sharing my story— it’ s about standing as proof that recovery is real. I have the strength to move forward, and I am blessed to have a second chance at life.
I am fortunate to share my story of survival with you. After various treatments and procedures, I have found a“ new normal.” I am well and healthy again— walking my dog, swimming, and travelling. While the experience remains frightening, there is no evidence of recurrence. I am not just surviving; I am a victor.
I have always been an active person. Fitness is a core part of my lifestyle, and activities like aquatic sports, weekend skiing, and going to the gym after work have always kept me happy and fit. I enjoyed my summers hiking the Rocky Mountains and Vancouver Island’ s West Coast Trail.
A year ago, I decided to volunteer to help run the stairclimb challenge. The event raises vital funds for Wellspring Alberta, a charity that supports Albertans affected by cancer. Their support meant everything to me while I was navigating my own cancer recovery. It allowed me to connect with others going through their own cancer experiences, ensuring that we never felt alone.
