Laurie Bauer, CAIB | Business Development Manager, Orbit Insurance Services
Whether you live in a city condo, suburban house, or rural property, fire prevention is essential for protecting your home and loved ones. Fires can strike unexpectedly, but with a few simple steps, you can reduce the risk year-round.
Why Fire Safety Matters in Canada
Canada’ s climate and geography create unique fire hazards— from wildfires in dry Western provinces to increased indoor heating risks in colder regions. Many fires are preventable with awareness and preparation.
Top Fire Prevention Tips
Install and maintain alarms
• Install smoke alarms on every level and in bedrooms.
• Have CO( carbon monoxide) detectors near sleeping areas and fuel-burning appliances.
• Test alarms monthly, replace batteries yearly, and replace your alarms every ten years.
Practise a fire escape plan
• Identify two exits per room and a meeting spot outside.
• Hold practice fire drills twice a year, including at night.
Cook safely
• Stay in the kitchen when cooking with heat-based appliances.
• Keep flammable items away from the stove
• For grease fires, use a metal lid or Class B fire extinguisher— never water.
Prevent electrical hazards
• Don’ t overload outlets.
• Use CSA-approved cords and replace damaged wires.
• Avoid running cords under rugs.
