THE WORLD IN BRUSH & PEN

My Hero

Hiroshi Shimazaki
In 2023, I travelled to Chile, a country I had long yearned to visit and enjoyed vistas and mingling with locals.
One afternoon near Reina Victoria funicular, deep, rich sounds from a cello resonated. On my last day in Valparaiso, I met the cellist again near the flea market. He was excited to see this sketch and photographed it as a memento of our chance encounters. I often think of David Vazquez Adonis, a street musician for forty years, as a hero. He is the embodiment of the essential nobility in relentless human striving.
