National Advocacy Efforts

Marilyn Bossert Vice President, ACER-CART
ACER-CART( Association canadienne des enseignantes et des enseignants retraités / Canadian Association of Retired Teachers) is a national, bilingual, non-partisan association committed to speaking to government and all political parties in support of not only retired teachers, but all retirees in Canada. Here is what we’ ve heard recently.
Calls to Action Over the Last Eighteen Months
At the 2025 AGM in June, a resolution to support Canadian sovereignty was unanimously passed.“ ACER-CART believes it is essential that Canada control its own destiny, support and strengthen its sovereignty and economic security, and respond rapidly and effectively to any action threatening Canada’ s vital interests. Our future as an independent and prosperous nation depends on this. Elbows Up!”
In May 2025, President Bill Berryman wrote to Prime Minister Carney expressing concern with the government’ s decision to eliminate the position of Minister of Seniors within the new cabinet. A Secretary of State position was created, but that position lacks the influence of a full cabinet position.
Prior to the spring election, ACER-CART prepared a brochure, Seniors’ Issues for the 2025 Federal Election, identifying the issues of Aging in Place, Opposition to Privatization of Medical Services, Canadian Sovereignty, Ensuring Retirement Income for Canadians, and the National Pharmacare Plan.
In October of 2024, ACER-CART responded favourably to the passage of Bill C-64, An Act Respecting Pharmacare, but also pointed out that it was only a beginning.
In April 2024, the ACER-CART president composed a letter to then Prime Minister Trudeau, asking for a review of the access / eligibility rules to the Canadian Dental Care Plan. In the letter, he advocated for acceptance into the dental plan to be based on income and wealth alone, which he argued would make for more transparent and appropriate criteria.
ACER-CART listens and advocates to government and all political parties on behalf of all Canadian seniors. To learn more about our efforts, I encourage you to visit Calls to Action at bit. ly / ACERCARTAdvocacy
