going beyond Thanksgiving when we have bulk sales as customers prepare for winter . We hold the market garden on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p . m . and Saturdays from 11 a . m . to 1 p . m . Volunteers typically arrive an hour prior to the market to harvest and prepare produce for sale or to do fieldwork like bed preparation , planting , weeding , and maintaining pathways . No experience is necessary , and the many experienced gardeners in our community willingly share their knowledge . Benefits of volunteering in our gardening community include being part of something bigger , getting your hands in the soil , getting physical exercise , getting out in the fresh air , and of course , the social aspect .
I have made many good friends at the garden over the years , and it is a place where we share recipes , talk about books we have read , discuss the issues of the day , and , of course , play with the garden children !
Visitors are always welcome , and if you come , you might just get your hands dirty !
ARTA member Margaret Milner retired as an RN and associate professor of nursing at MacEwan University in 2021 . Besides garden volunteering , Margaret is also enrolled in the Master Composter Recycler Program with the City of Edmonton . She is passionate about volunteering in spaces that preserve the environment for future generations .
