Building Creative

Habits

Jock Mackenzie Article and Photos

I love thinking outside the box and have been fortunate to find individuals and groups who share this joy.

We all enjoy the feeling of satisfaction achieving something that’ s even just a little bit special. We have the desire to take the path less travelled( it’ s certainly not crowded). To varying degrees, we have abilities, tools, time, and finances that allow us to pursue creative projects. Here are a few things I’ ve learned about being creative that I think almost anyone can make use of.
A mentor is a tremendous help. Former teaching colleague Jerry Williamson taught me, in small, manageable steps, how to do stained glass. My first projects were small and always followed the pattern provided— no true creativity. Gradually, I learned that choosing the best glass and patina colouring added extra uniqueness. My pièce de résistance was a large floral design for our front door. Much of it used a clear swirled glass. I challenged myself to divide ide one large piece into seven sections while still preserving the original swirl design. Others may not notice or appreciate the result, but that special touch is a personal treasure.
