A Lunchtime Discovery
Leaving the museum, we found ourselves surrounded by office workers carrying identical takeout boxes. Curiosity got the better of us, so we followed them back to a small restaurant. Inside, we discovered unforgettable poutine topped with Portuguese BBQ chicken— flavourful, tender, and wonderfully satisfying.
Notre-Dame Basilica Night Show
This spectacular show blends traditional cathedral imagery with modern light and music. It’ s spiritual, artistic, and emotionally stirring. Seniors receive a discount, and arriving early ensures a good seat.
Old Port of Montreal
We visited just after Thanksgiving. The foliage wasn’ t at its peak, but the waterfront was still beautiful. The promenade stretched long and scenic, full of walkers and cyclists. The air was crisp, and across the water we could see the Biodome. I lingered there, imagining the port’ s bustling past.
As an e-bike enthusiast, I promised myself that on my next visit, I will return with a bike and ride this picturesque promenade from end to end.

Ste-Catherine Street and the Underground City
Ste-Catherine Street is lively— shops, cafés, and people everywhere. Beneath it lies Montreal’ s famous underground city: a warm, weather-proof network of walkways, malls, and metro stations. We wandered for hours, discovering boutiques, eateries, and art installations without stepping outside.
A Photographer’ s Delight: Night Scenes at Our Doorstep
One unexpected joy of staying downtown was how close we were to some of Montreal’ s most photogenic night scenes. Each evening, I could step outside and walk a few minutes to capture the city after dark. The glow of storefronts, reflections on wet pavement, and the mix of old and modern buildings gave me endless opportunities for memorable shots.
Just a short walk away, McGill University’ s downtown campus added another layer of beauty. At night, its historic stone buildings glowed softly under the lamps, and the quiet pathways felt almost like stepping into a European courtyard. It was peaceful, dignified, and surprisingly enchanting.
Another Surprise: Major Attractions Just Steps Away
Many iconic places were within easy walking distance of our hotel. The Bell Centre— home of the Montreal Canadiens— was only a short stroll away. On the night we attended the cathedral light show, the Canadiens were playing, yet downtown never felt chaotic. Fans blended seamlessly into the evening streets, creating a lively but relaxed atmosphere.
Old Town was also close enough to reach on foot. Its cobblestone lanes, historic buildings, and charming cafés made it easy to spend hours exploring without needing transit.
