Advocate for a Minister of Seniors

Marilyn Bossert Vice President, ACER-CART
The Minister of Seniors has been a vital advocate at the federal cabinet level to ensure seniors’ issues receive dedicated attention at the highest level of government— a role that the Association canadienne des enseignantes et des enseignants retraités – Canadian Association of Retired Teachers and its members have advocated for for over a decade. ACER-CART is profoundly disappointed and concerned with the current government’ s decision to eliminate the position of Minister of Seniors. Instead, seniors are currently represented by a Secretary of State( Seniors), a position that is not a full cabinet post. ACER-CART is greatly troubled by this decline of commitment to addressing the unique and urgent needs of Canada’ s growing aging population.
ACER-CART is calling upon the government to seriously reconsider this decision and restore a dedicated, full-time Minister of Seniors.
Canada’ s seniors deserve and expect a strong, committed voice in cabinet to address critical issues such as health care, the National Pharmacare Program, long-term care, the Canadian Dental Care Plan, financial security, and the fight against ageism.
