PENSION & FINANCIAL WELLNESS

The True North by RV

Larry Hartel Member, Pension & Financial Wellness Committee, ARTA

Exploring our country in an RV can be a memorable experience, although many who might enjoy the journey are turned away by the upfront price or the additional costs associated with RV travel.

My wife and I started camping forty-five years ago. We’ ve used tents, various trailers, and finally, our motorhome, which we still use today. In all our years of travel, I’ ve learned that RVing can be very affordable— if you do it right.
By learning to do your own upkeep, planning your trips well, and making use of helpful technology, you can save money while enjoying the beautiful landscapes and attractions Canada has to offer.
Choose the Right RV
Not all RVs are created equal, especially when it comes to price. A smaller RV or a camper van will usually cost less, use less fuel, and is easier to drive and park. They can also fit into smaller spaces, giving you more options when looking for affordable places to camp.
Always check RV reviews, whether buying or renting, for information on their reliability, fuel efficiency, and any hidden upkeep costs. You can also learn about the pros and cons of different models by attending RV shows. When possible, find an RV that you can learn to fix yourself, avoiding hefty repair bills.
The loss of space in a smaller RV can be remedied with smart storage solutions. Use collapsible containers and bins to keep items tidy. Pack a kitchen tent to use as an extra room outdoors that is protected from rain and insects.
Plan Your Trip Wisely
When planning your RV trip, embrace the off-season when prices for campsites and attractions are often lower.
Many campgrounds offer discounts for extended stays, so consider staying longer in a single location instead of moving frequently. Private RV parks and golf resorts are also good places to look for lower rates and discounts.
