When we hear the phrase“ keep moving,” most of us think about staying physically active. That is certainly part of living well, but I believe it means something more. It is about being open to change, embracing new opportunities, and never becoming comfortable staying still.
That mindset has helped shape the Alberta Retired Teachers’ Association for more than sixty years.
Retirement today looks very different than it did even a decade ago. Our members are travelling, volunteering, caring for grandchildren, learning new skills, and finding more ways to contribute to their communities. Retirement is no longer about slowing down— it is about living life with purpose, and ARTA must continue to grow and evolve alongside our members.
For me, focusing on our members starts with listening. It means paying attention to what matters today while also anticipating what members will need tomorrow. That is how we continue to make thoughtful decisions about the programs, services, and benefits we offer.
Sometimes innovation means launching something new. More often, it involves improving what we already do. Whether we’ re expanding wellness initiatives, strengthening our advocacy, embracing new technology, or finding better ways to connect with members, every decision begins with a simple question: Will this make a positive difference in our members’ lives?
What makes me most optimistic about ARTA’ s future are the people behind it. Our staff, volunteers, and Board of Directors care deeply about this association and the members we serve. They are always looking for better ideas, better solutions, and better ways to ensure ARTA remains relevant and responsive in a changing world.
Change is inevitable. Technology will evolve, expectations will shift, and new opportunities will emerge. Rather than seeing that as a challenge, I see it as an opportunity to continue building an association that our members can be proud of. Standing still has never been part of ARTA’ s story, and I hope it never will be.
As CEO, I am excited about where we are headed. By continuing to listen, learn, and adapt, we will ensure ARTA remains a trusted partner through every stage of retirement. Together, we will keep moving forward with purpose, confidence, and our members at the heart of everything we do.
