Excellent accommodation and service await you in these locations. Various lodges along the coast of British Columbia and inland resorts cater to itinerant anglers. Coastal resorts also often feature outstanding amenities, like delicious seafood— think clams, crabs, halibut, oysters, salmon— and outstanding British Columbian wines. Wildlife enthusiasts won’ t be disappointed with sightings of black bear, bald eagles, Sitka deer, Roosevelt elk, sea lions, seals, and maybe— if you’ re fortunate— killer whales.
The big draw of Canada’ s Maritimes is fly angling for Atlantic salmon during the autumn. Salmon aficionados dream about catching fish that are steeped in lore; they’ ll often talk in hushed tones about“ almost” catching one and long remember the swirl of a salmon as it checked out their fly patterns. As the saying goes:“ Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.” I’ ve had the fortune of fly angling for Atlantic salmon in Newfoundland, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, where I’ ve landed several of these legendary fish— truly life moments in the annals of a fly angler.
Naturally, you’ ll also want to enjoy a meal of cod, lobster, mussels, and scallops during your trip, along with some fine wines from local vineyards. Baco noir is one of my favourites. Enjoy a stay at a local bed-and-breakfast or country inn, and maybe take in a Celtic music performance to get in the Maritime mood. The laid-back atmosphere of the locals is refreshing, as is their genuine hospitality towards those who come from away.
All you need is to boldly make plans for what could be the trip of a lifetime in pursuit of angling on either coast. Enough said!
