The 2026 ACER-CART annual general meeting( AGM) was hosted by British Columbia Retired Teachers’ Association( BCRTA) in the beautiful city of Vancouver.
Alberta President
Lawrence Hyrcan, ARTA member and recent treasurer, is the incoming president of ACER-CART( Association Canadienne des Enseignantes et des Enseignants Retraités – Canada’ s Association of Retired Teachers).
“ I take pleasure in working alongside individuals who take actions diligently and passionately for the betterment of seniors in Canada.”
2026 – 2027 Priorities
The ACER-CART AGM approves priorities that revolve around issues affecting the well-being of Canadian seniors. The 2026 – 2027 priorities will continue elevating the profile of ACER-CART within the provincial associations and at all levels of government through ongoing advocacy with three strategies:
1. Advocate for the protection and full implementation of the Canada Health Act, ensuring equitable access to publicly funded health care for all Canadians.
2. Support the development and implementation of a comprehensive Aging in Place strategy for all Canadians, enabling individuals to live safely, independently, and with dignity in their homes and communities for as long as possible.
3. Advocate for dedicated federal and provincial ministers responsible for seniors and aging, ensuring focused leadership, accountability, and cooperation of policies affecting older adults.
Zena Simces
Guest speaker Zena Simces is a health and social policy senior consultant with over 30 years of experience in managing complex projects and acting as a change agent. She encouraged the assembly to become leaders in embracing aging.“ Aging with dignity means equity in aging.” Her call to action:“ Aging is a right. Actions need to focus on a fuller and safer life with the appropriate supports.”
Chris Galloway
Guest speaker Chris Galloway is an experienced community organizer and advocate for public health care, and is currently working with Friends of Medicare in Alberta. His message around Bill 11 and its effect on the current health care situation in Alberta touched a nerve with all members of the assembly, whatever their home province.
Appreciation to ARTA
ACER-CART has been reliant on the support of the ARTA staff( especially CEO Daniel Mulloy and CFO Scott Tywoniuk) while without an executive director. ACER-CART is very appreciative of that support.
