VI OKO

In October 1992 , with about 1250 members in the Alberta Retired Teachers ’ Association , newly elected ARTA officers aimed to increase membership and to improve communication with retired teachers across the province .

A limited handwritten President ’ s Newsletter was mailed to the membership once or twice a year for many years . Then , during Ron Rhine ’ s four-year term as the ARTA executive secretary , the ancestor of news & views , ARTA News & Views , was born . ( Ron had previously served three consecutive terms as treasurer followed by three years as president from October 1983 to October 1989 .)
In late March of 1994 , Lil Fuhr , an executive assistant in the ATA office , offered to critique a long newsletter that Ron had just finished composing . Shortly thereafter , the April 1994 issue of the ARTA News & Views was presented to Ron as a fait accompli .
Three MHADRTA members designed the logo that appeared in the newsletters during his term of office . The oval-shaped logo had a stylized ARTA acronym and a motto suggested by Ron , “ Looking Ahead ,” on the oval .
The format of the twelve-page newsletter that was published three times a year remained relatively unchanged even after Gerry Smith was appointed to the executive secretary position in June of 1996 . Following a solo attempt at production , Gerry shared the editorial duties for producing the newsletter with Madeline Fischer , an extremely active ARTA member from Medicine Hat . This joint effort began with the April 1997 issue and continued until the fall / winter 2000 edition when Madeline assumed sole responsibility for the publication because of Gerry ’ s increased workload in the ARTA office .
In the summer of 1999 , Grace Christie , another member of the Medicine Hat branch , became part of the News & Views production team as the first proofreader and advisor .
At the 2000 annual general meeting , the position of editor was officially established in ARTA ’ s bylaws as a special appointment . Madeline Fischer was appointed to the position for a three-year term and paid a small stipend . She announced her resignation as editor of the ARTA News & Views in the summer 2004 issue .
