Several cocktails incorporate flowers to add a unique and visually appealing touch . Many edible flowers will upgrade a martini or Italian Spritz , but my favourite is a hibiscus margarita infused with a simple syrup made from the tangy flowers .
Rose petal sangria is a floral twist on traditional sangria , using rose petals , rose water , rosé wine , mixed fruits , and a splash of sparkling water .
For those who don ’ t imbibe , tulip or lavender blossoms can be steeped to create a sweet syrup that can be mixed with sparkling water for a refreshing drink . Alternatively , you can skip the sugar and infuse your water with camomile flowers or rose petals for a unique twist .
For those who like to experiment in the kitchen , zucchini blossoms can be used in various dishes such as stuffed zucchini flowers with cheese , fried zucchini flowers , zucchini flower frittata , or even zucchini flower pasta . They can contribute a subtle taste and captivating visual appeal to your dishes .
If you grow nasturtiums in your garden , you can use these edible flowers to add a pop of colour and a peppery kick to a salad . Stuffed with cream cheese or hummus , they make an elegant appetizer . Ditch your basil pesto for a nasturtium pesto mixed with garlic , pine nuts , Parmesan cheese and olive oil .
Elder trees produce late spring elderflowers that have a delicate floral quality and can be used in various recipes . Elderflower granita is a wonderful summer treat and palate cleanser . The flowers can also be added to desserts and cordials for a subtle floral flavour .
Don ’ t forget to add pansy and violet blossoms to your shortbread and cakes , or toss them in a spring salad for a pop of colour .
Edible flowers can be a tremendous addition to your culinary arsenal and are , in my opinion , largely underused . They have the ability to enhance the aroma , flavour , and visual attractiveness of many dishes and refreshments . Learning to use and appreciate flowers in the kitchen is a nod to our collective heritage .
